Openreach broadband upgrade
As broadband technology is advancing at a great pace, all areas of the UK will be upgraded to new types of fibre connections by 2025. As these new fibre technologies don’t need a phone line, the nationwide upgrade will also include the phasing out of landline telephone systems. Openreach decide which regions get upgraded and when. So, depending where in the country you live, you’ll have different types of broadband connections available to you.

As new technology rolls out, the good news is we’ll always offer you our best and latest packages you can get at your address. And you’ll be able to upgrade as new connections reach your area. So, we’ll help you get set up and ready for the modern world, with simple straightforward broadband at straightforward prices.
Our packages
Our broadband service is at the centre of all our products. We've got a range of great value packages, for all your online needs, from daily browsing through to ultrafast streaming. These are our main products:
Broadband and phone packages
Broadband and phone packages use traditional technology, which means a working phone line is needed to set up your connection. A landline is how we get broadband to your home. It takes the signal from the street side cabinet (the large green box on or near your road) through to your router. This ensures you can get online.
Unlimited Broadband uses an older technology called Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). This type of connection only uses copper cables to carry the signals, so provides essential speeds. It's a no frills package, perfect for everyday online activities like browsing, shopping and social media.
Unlimited Fibre and Fibre Extra is provided as Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC). It differs from standard broadband and is sometimes described as part fibre. It uses a combination of fibre and copper cables to get you connected. Fibre optic cables from the BT Exchange carry signals to your street cabinet, then copper cables are used to carry the signals to your home using a landline.
Fibre cables can handle larger amounts of data which means these packages offer higher speeds than standard broadband. They provide faster and more stable connection, so they're great for streaming, downloading and gaming on multiple devices.

Broadband only packages
These types of packages are provided as fibre broadband only. This means they don’t use a phone line to set up your connection. Simply put, they’re broadband without a landline. We like to think of them as phone-line free fibre. With these packages you don’t need to pay for line rental or a home phone service you don’t use. All our broadband only packages have unlimited usage too.
Full Fibre packages
Full Fibre is sometimes called FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). Using next generation technology Full Fibre connects straight to your home so you don't need a phone line. A direct fibre optic connection means there's no copper cables or sharing bandwidth with your neighbours. This game-changing connection is all yours, so you can get ultrafast, reliable speeds up to 900Mb++ This package is made for busy online homes. Streaming, HD gaming Smart Home tech, working from home – you name it, with Full Fibre, everyone and everything's connected at the same time with incredible speeds.
Full Fibre is a broadband only package, so you don't need to pay for line rental. If you want to keep your home phone line, you'll need to arrange that with your current landline provider.
Full Fibre is so new it's not available everywhere just yet, but we're working as fast as we can to roll this out across the UK. If it's not reached you, we'll let you know when it does, and you can upgrade at any time.

Fibre
Our Fibre package use a new and simple connection, so it’s set up without a phone line.
The connection uses standard part-fibre technology. Fibre optic cables carry signals to your street cabinet, then copper cables are used to connect to your home.
Best of all, with one straightforward Fibre package, you’ll get your fastest available speed at our best possible price. So you could get average speeds of up to 66Mb. Great for streaming, gaming, and sharing all with super savings.
This type of Fibre connection is sometimes called SoGEA, which stands for Single order Generic Ethernet Access. Yeah, it’s definitely one to forget! Most important thing to remember is, it’s broadband with no phone line and will offer you the best possible speed you can get.
Φ Unlimited Broadband uses an older technology, which is a bit of a mouthful, called Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL for short). This type of connection only uses copper cables to carry signals to your home so it's not as fast as fibre.

This type of connection is called SoGEA. It stands for Single order Generic Ethernet Access – not the sexiest of broadband names, so that’s why we prefer to just call it Fibre.
Fibre is a broadband only package that doesn’t use a phone line to set up your connection or offer a landline phone service. It’s broadband, no landline, with average speeds up to 66Mb. Simple as that.
++ Full Fibre is sometimes called FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). Using next generation technology, Full Fibre connects straight to your home so you don’t need a phone line. The 'full' bit in Full Fibre means that your connection uses 100% fibre optic cables direct to your door. There’s no copper cables or sharing with your street. This game-changing connection is all yours, so you can get ultrafast, reliable speeds up to 900Mb++.

Standard broadband and fibre packages with a home phone line are available in 12 and18 month contracts.
Our broadband only Fibre and Full Fibre packages are 24 month contracts.

This is the 'advertised speed' and is the maximum speed generally possible using that type of connection or product. It's a purely technical description which helps you choose the type of product suitable for you - however it's useful to bear in mind not all products may be available in your area and the actual speed you'll get can depend on a number of factors such as your location, line, home wiring, WiFi connection and time of day.
Speed is measured in Megabits (Mb) per second and a speed test will measure both the download speed (affecting the time it takes to view a webpage, read an email or download or stream a file) and the upload speed (affecting the time it takes to upload a photo or video to Facebook for example).

We'll give you a personal estimate of the speed you'll get when you use our Broadband postcode checker. The speed you'll actually get can depend on a number of factors, including:
- The type of broadband or fibre product you have chosen
- Distance of your property from the nearest BT roadside cabinet or Exchange
- Quality and age of your phone line
- Electrical interference from things like generators and power lines
- The number of people sharing the network
- Your router and WiFi setup within your property
- Full Fibre speeds will depend on home wiring, WiFi connection and time of day.

It's often overlooked, but the speed you get from your Internet connection is greatly affected by how your home network and router (Plusnet Hub) is set up.
If you have your router downstairs and connect over WiFi upstairs for example, this can provide a much slower connection than if you were closer to the router or connecting to it using Ethernet cables. For more information, see our tips for Getting the best WiFi signal.
All of our current broadband packages come with unlimited usage, no matter what time of day. So there is no need to worry about going over or being charged extra, these things don't exist with our current broadband products.
Some ISPs might restrict your speed based on how much you've used through Traffic Management or 'fair usage' policies – no need to worry though, Plusnet's Unlimited products don't have any traffic management applied to them – for more information see About your broadband speeds.
When you sign up to us we include the router, and its postage and packaging all for no extra cost. If you're already a customer and want to order a new router, you'll need to contact us.

We’re rolling out Full Fibre as fast as we can. If it’s available where you live, you’ll see Full Fibre packages in your deals. Just enter your details into our broadband postcode checker.
With the increased use of mobile phone devices and internet video calling, home phone line usage is in decline. As part of the nationwide upgrade, Openreach are phasing out phone lines, and installing new fibre networks which don’t use the old landline system.
As our broadband only products use the latest fibre technology available in your area, there’s no landline needed to set up these connections. This means there’s no phone line service provided with our Fibre and Full Fibre packages.
